PRINCE GEORGE — One wasn’t good enough for Prince George’s Meryeta O’Dine, so she opted to complete her Olympic experience in Beijing with a second bronze medal.

The 24-year-old competed in Friday night’s Mixed Team Snowboard Cross event, paired up with men’s silver medalist Eliot Grondin. This was the first time this particular event was held at the Olympics.

O’Dine was coming off of a bronze medal performance from the women’s snowboard cross earlier in the week in her Olympic debut.

The pair cruised through to the final event, with Grondin consistently earning O’Dine a large lead with the men’s heat running ahead of the women.

In the final, O’Dine was involved in a crash with Italy’s Caterina Carpano halfway through the race but the Northern grit of O’Dine saw her pick herself up to get across the line approximately 23 seconds after the first two finishers.

Americans Nick Baumgartner and Lindsey Jacobellis took home the gold medal in the event. Omar Visintin and Michela Moioli of Italy finished with silver.

Meryeta’s mother, Virginia, watched her daughter race to her second Olympic medal at the Westwood Pub in Prince George, alongside friends and family.

Virginia admitted she was even more excited for the event when she heard Meryeta would be paired up with Canada’s other medalist in Eliot Grondin.

“It’s the dream team. It’s the abolsute dream team. I’m so happy for both of them,” she said.

It was also a heartwarming feeling for the mother of Prince George’s only Olympic medalist to feel the support from friends, family, and in some cases complete strangers around her.

“For so many years, I’d wake up at two or three in the morning, and watch the european feeds of her races on my laptop at home alone. So nice to share that excitement with everyone who cares about her,” Virginia explained.

She added she hasn’t seen her daughter in person for five months, experiencing their first ever Christmas apart. But it’s safe to say that moment the two reunite with be even sweeter than expected with two Olympic medals around Meryeta’s neck.
