The curling tradition of the chicken hat continues in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – With the World Women’s Curling Championships happening in Prince George, the city has welcomed visitors from far and wide.

Walking the concourse of the CN Centre, whether Canada happens to be playing or not, you may find yourself having your eye caught by an interesting character.

60-year-old Dee Hopley has made a name for herself by being easily spotted by her chicken hat.

For about 10 years, Hopley has worn her chicken hat to every single curling event she’s been to. The hat itself was originally an idea of her sister brought four back from a trip to Vegas. It grew further with more chicken hats being bought as a way to easily pick each other out when at events.

Dee and her husband, Grant, continued the tradition. Except now, in Prince George, Dee has made the trip alone.

Two years ago, her husband was diagnosed with MDS, commonly known as preleukemia. A quick time later, he was gone. Last summer, Hopley dealt with another loss of a close friend who regularly tagged along to events.

“I have to continue with it,” she said.

And she is, right here in Prince George as the city celebrates a long wait to host its first ever World Curling event.
