PRINCE GEORGE – The BC Minister of Education made a surprise stop in Prince George Friday to meet with School District 57 and local Indigenous leaders.

This marked the first time Minister Jennifer Whiteside had visited BC’s Northern Capital in her role, and the first time she made an in-person appearance since the SD57 Special Advisors Report was released.

The 26-page report was the subject of most of the conversations and meetings the Minister had while in town, along with graduation rates for Indigenous students as the province tries to “close the gap” for Indigenous learners.

The report laid out 45 recommendations, some of which have been addressed already, while others are still a work in progress.

Another item recently brought up was the addition of designated Indigenous school trustees to the SD57 Board of Education.

When asked about where the status of that was at, Whiteside said it was a long-term discussion.
