PRINCE GEORGE – Made up like a caterpillar, the City’s Manager of Entertainment Glen Mikkelson announced the return of Cirque du Soleil to our city. It comes after a series of events scheduled to grace the city to fall victim to COVID. But Cirque is back. This latest performance is called OVO, which means egg in Portuguese, and it will send the city buzzing, so to speak.

“It is awesome! It’s jubilant to have such a happy story to share with people after things have been so crummy for the last couple of years,” says Mikkelsen.

For Tourism Prince George, this is very welcome news, and for all the businesses that rely on showgoers.

“We’ve seen that with curling. That was a massive event and it did wonders for the hotels and restaurants and those businesses that have been struggling for the last couple of years, says Colin Carson, CEO of Tourism Prince George.

And it is a massive undertaking.

“Oh yeah, it’s gonna take a lot of pre-planning this show in here. There are over twenty trucks that come with it, right? It is a logistical, plan. It will take weeks with our crew and the various people who help us put on the show to make this happen.”

Not only does the performance involve twenty trucks of equipment, but there are also 100 people involved, including 52 performers, from 25 different countries.

“The theme is insects. There’s a whole variety of bugs. There are gnats that jump up and down, I think there’s a spider. They’re such clever people putting on such a show.”

Since opening in Montreal in 2009, Ovo has thrilled seven million people in 155 cities in 26 different countries around the world. The show runs from June 30th to July 3rd. Tickets go on sale on Monday.
