City drafting new downtown plan

PRINCE GEORGE – A lot has changed in the downtown in recent years. Prior to the Park House development, there was virtually no housing in the city’s core. But there now there is new student housing as well as apartments. And Council recently approved a new Civic Core Plan.

“We’ve had a lot, over the years, of plans for the downtown,” explains Tiina Schaeffer, Manager of Infrastructure. “The one that’s really stuck is our Smart Growth on the Ground concept plan. That was done in 2009 and adopted by Council at that time. And that was done with a lot of engagement and a lot of interested parties and user groups in the downtown.”

The new plan is ten-year plan and looks to build on things like the new downtown pool and the new entrance to the library. But it also sets out to improve the trails through Connaught Hill Park. But there are also some tough decisions coming to the new Council of the day … what to do with some very significant facilities in the heart of the downtown.

“We’ve got two demolitions that are going to take place in the downtown. So opportunities.. We’re going to see the old pool and the old fire hall #1. We also have our very old arena in the downtown. The Rolling Mix Concrete Arena. Capital reinvestment needs are increasing exponentially. And it’s time to take a look at some of those things as well as our arts and culture assets we have.”

In December of 2021, the drafty Downtown Arts Strategy was released. It recommended various arts and cultural space needs in the downtown. Unfortunately, COVID put the brakes on any further consultation. As for the Civic Plan, the City is looking to hire a consultant in the very near future.

“We anticipate Council will be seeing the update on what that submitted work plan from the successful proponent work plan, timelines. A little more specific timelines as well as what the public engagement plan looks like going forward.

It is expected public engagement plan will come back to Council this fall and the final plan will come together next year.
