Record-breaking snowfall in cards for Prince George

Apr 19, 2022 | 6:37 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – Snowfall this late in April is rare in Prince George, snowfall that sticks to the ground and accumulates similar to Tuesday morning is even more of a rarity. The forecast called for up to 15 cm, which put the city in the record breaking range.

The previous record for most snow on the ground according to Environment Canada was set back in 2013 with 11 cm of snow.

The most snowfall on a single day was a much older record set back in 1980 with 4.2 cm on April 19.

Tuesday around 9 a.m. over 13 cm of snow was recorded on the ground in College Heights, around 1 p.m. just over 11 cm was recorded in the bowl near the College of New Caledonia, and 11 cm was recorded at the Prince George Airport.

Environment Canada could not confirm the record was broken, citing data still had to be collected and confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

One record that was likely broken is the most snowfall in a single day.

Depending on when and where the measurement was taken could determine if April 19, 2022 will go down in the history books as the snowiest on record.

Prince George RCMP note there were no major accidents to report from the day despite many people around the city having already removed their winter tires.

If winter conditions do continue as expected on Tuesday evening, extreme caution is advised as icy sections and compact snow could face drivers on local roadways.
