Roadway robins

Speeding road traffic threatening birds’ lives

PRINCE GEORGE – Many people think about the arrival of spring when the robins begin to appear.

The migratory birds are known to make a quick stop in our region. However, the recent snowfall has forced some birds to land on roadways, threatening their lives.

Robins are well equipped to deal with cold and snow.

UNBC Professor Doctor Ken Otter says the snow has blanketed the ground where they usually forage and forced them to the open roadway.

This unusual behaviour has some bird watchers concerned for the birds’ safety, as speeding road traffic kills birds.

The robins expect to start nesting in the next few weeks. In the meantime, drivers can avoid killing birds on the roadway by slowing down, which gives the robin enough time to fly away.
