PRINCE GEORGE – For the tenth year in a row, the University of Northern BC can toot its horn about being green. It is ranked as one of the nation’s greenest employers.

“We are Canada’s Green University because our UNBC community is committed to working together to find ways to make our operations efficient and sustainable,” says UNBC President Dr. Geoff Payne. “This award recognizes the initiative our students, faculty and staff demonstrate when they develop creative solutions that allow UNBC to continue to be a leader in environmental stewardship.”

Just to name a few reasons the university has earned such accolades, there is the Energy Wise program, which is an annual awareness program for students, faculty and staff, UNBC’s annual Green Fund, which is a $50,000 grant funding program for projects that support a more sustainable campus, Green Day which is an annual day to showcase green initiatives on campus and the Good Food Box program.

UNBC has also made several retrofits to buildings on campus, it has realized 250-thousand dollars in energy savings over the past two years and has reduced its electricity consumption by as much as 1.7 million kilowatt-hours, enough to heat 150 Canadian homes for a year.

But, there’s always room for improvement and the university recognizes that. It’s why they have created the Green University Strategic Task Force, Chaired by Dr. Ronald Camp, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, to help shape the continued evolution of Canada’s Green University.

“This task force will look at sustainability through the triple bottom line lens. Namely, how the decisions we make impact people, the environment and the University’s financial capacity,” Camp says. “UNBC is well placed to lead by example in its operations, as well as through research and scholarly activity, share solutions with others across northern British Columbia and around the world.”

For several years. UNBC has held the title of Canada’s Green University.
