Radio legend retires

PRINCE GEORGE – For over thirty-six years, morning show radio host Doug Jones has been a part of many people’s morning wake-up routine and drive to work. Today, however, the radio legend turned off his mic, hung up his headphones, and joined the retirement community.

Doug Jones is typically never short for words, but he was filled with mixed emotions on Thursday morning as he closed out his radio career and retired.

Looking back, he says he originally wanted to get into journalism before pursuing a career in radio.

“I took the Humber College radio program. I was going to try to get into journalism but that program filled up too fast and I was a little late so I thought what the heck, I’ll try radio.”

He got his first job in Wawa Ontario and never looked back, eventually arriving in Prince George in 1985.

“Getting into radio you do a bit of work but it’s fun. It’s one of those things you say you love and have a passion for and then you never work a day in your life. The work isn’t work, it’s fun.”

Radio, for many, is the link that connects us, and Jones was known for being a big part of bringing the community together with his show and personality. He says making connections with listeners was key, and provided a lot of fodder for conversation with local residents while off work.

And he wasn’t just good on the radio. He also shared his talents on television as well.

“I remember working with you Dave Branco on our Thursday night TV segments and trying to do funny things via video and making those connections and we did a story about a stick hanging off a median. I drove by it every day and I thought ‘I want to do a story about that stick.’ It sounds silly but we did the story and I received so much response to it. I met all these wonderful people and it was a great journey and for me it was the best choice of my life”

So what’s next for Jones?

“My wife has been retired for about a year now and we are very excited. We’re looking for a little travel trailer so we can go and explore. In my 36 plus years here I haven’t been north of Dawson Creek or west of Smithers. I want to go to Liard Hot Springs. I want to take the circle trip around Stikine.”

Jen and Logan will take over the Rewind Rewind morning show starting Friday.
