Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers win Gold at BC Ukrainian Dance Festival

PRINCE GEORGE– The Yalenka Community Hall may look like an ordinary building from the outside. But on the inside, the building is buzzing. Whether that’s language & cultural classes taking place or the famous Yalenka Dancing.

For me, it’s so special because it’s always a party, it’s always a celebration. Every dance just has a celebration aspect to it and the music is so fun and vibrant. We jump, we spin, we turn, we smile we have fun! – Tatianna Bodenham,

Tatianna Bodenham has been a Yalenka Dancer for 14 years. It’s become a passion for her ever since she got into the activity at a very young age. The reason she got into it? Her mom Leanne, who was a former dancer and now a Board Member of the Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers.

Leanne Bodenham is now encouraging other dancers to join the society as the dance group has shrunk due to the pandemic.

We welcome anyone of any dance capability. You don’t even have to be Ukrainian in order to join. You just have to have the love of dance especially if you love the cultural side of it! – Leanne Bodenham

One of those dancers who also loves the cultural side of it is Ollie Pawluk. A big reason why is because she is 50% Ukrainian. When she is dancing she feels obligated to represent her country and show people her Ukrainian culture. Something someone overseas might not be able to do right now with the tragic invasion of the country taking place.

Being able to represent how strong we are as a culture and as a community is important. I feel like the struggle we are all going through is very real and very hard for everyone. Knowing there is a release, a sense of safety in what we do, bringing happiness and joy to the people who can’t do it, it’s always been a very big part for me. – Ollie Pawluk

This past weekend the senior Yalenka Dance class won gold and the best hopak trophy for their hopak dance down at the BC Ukrainian Dance Festival in Mission. It’s the 2nd time the trophy is headed back to Prince George with the last one being won in 2010.

The Society is also planning on hosting a Ukraine Fundraiser at the end of the month. A concert will take place at the Prince George Playhouse on Sunday, May 28th with all ticket sales going to displaced Ukrainian victims of War.

Tickets are $25 and for more information on the event, you can call the Yalenka Community Hall or (250)-613-3407. You can also email yalenkadancerspg@gmail.com

Doors open at 6:30 PM with the concert starting at 7:00 PM all to support a great cause and see some unique dancing as well.
