Youth employment significantly impacted by pandemic: UNBC survey

PRINCE GEORGE – It should come as no surprise the labour force was impacted in the early days of the pandemic into the dog days of the first pandemic summer, although who was most impacted may surprise you.

A recent survey from UNBC Political Science students in conjunction with the Prince George Chamber of Commerce looked into who was impacted and how. In total, the students received over 400 responses to the questionnaire aimed at those aged 18 to 24-years-old.

85% of respondents claimed their employment was impacted by the onset of COVID-19, everything from reduced hours to being completely laid off.

Since the reopening of the economy shown most in the first few months of 2022, the opposite effect has been happening with the labour force.

Instead of not being able to find a job, many business owners in retail, hospitality, and others have been unable to find employees.

Prince George has boasted one of the strongest economies in the entire country in that regard as unemployment numbers remain extremely low as other cities in BC fluctuate.

According to Todd Corrigall, CEO of the PG Chamber of Commerce the path forward will be the story to watch as policy makers weigh options to deal with the economy and inflation.
