Canada Day Festival in Prince George in doubt due to shortage of volunteers

PRINCE GEORGE — Since 1970, the Multicultural Heritage Society has proudly been hosting the Canada Day celebrations in Prince George and this year is supposed to be the year the festival returns after a COVID-19-induced hiatus, but it faces new challenges, putting this year’s party at risk.

“Having a two-year hiatus, we are kind of out of the loop,” says Marlies Greulich of the Multicultural Heritage Society. “We have lost all our contacts, sponsors, and volunteers.”

Marlies, who has been working with the festival for almost thirty years, starting as a volunteer in 1992, is worried the festival may not happen without more help.

“I can’t even find a coordinator. We have sent out job postings everywhere, and the whole thing is by next week, we will have to make a decision on if we will host the festival because I can’t do it myself.”

The event has become a favourite in Price George for its variety of ethnic foods and the hours of entertainment it provides. It also provides opportunities for local organizations such as Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers.

“It is our biggest fundraiser for the Yalenka dancers, and it helps us promote our program, dancing and culture,” says Liz Folwark, who works with the organization.

If you are interested in the coordinator position or volunteering with the Canada Day festival, you can contact the Multicultural Heritage Society by calling (250) 563-8525, emailing MHS.PG@Shawcable.com or by going to multiculturalheritage.com.
