Spruceland Elementary students continue ‘cub car’ tradition

PRINCE GEORGE – For as long as most staff at Spruceland Traditional Elementary School can remember, the cub car challenge has been a thrill for students in June.

Tuesday was no different as the senior students watched their constructed pinewood cars race down the ramp wrapping up the day with a championship final.

Students called it the most exciting day of the year.

After weeks of carving, shaving, and constructing cub cars of their own, Grade 6 and 7 students let them loose in the gymnasium in front of their friends. Even though the senior students made the cars and decorated them to their liking, all classes got in on the action watching intensely from the sidelines.

The first pinewood derby was held on May 15, 1953 in Manhattan Beach, California
