Prince George streets swamped after massive rainfall

PRINCE GEORGE – Crews from the City of Prince George continue cleaning up and evaluating damage from a large rainfall which hit downtown Tuesday afternoon.

It is unknown how much rain downtown Prince George received although it was enough to flood several streets and led to several residents reporting damage to buildings in the bowl area.

Frontline officers from the Prince George RCMP responded after several vehicles became stuck in high water on streets in the light industrial area off Queensway and on Winnipeg Street.

The Prince George RCMP would like the public to be aware of the following road closures and are asking the public to avoid the area while crews work to remove the excess water:

  • 1st Avenue – currently single lane traffic between George Street and Ottawa Street
  • 2nd Avenue – closed between Queensway and Ontario Street
  • Queenway between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue
  • Winnipeg Street – closed between 13th Avenue and 17th Avenue

The damages to Winnipeg Street are unknown at this point although the flooding occurred just a few hundred metres from a sinkhole the City of Prince George crews fixed back in 2018.

More details are expected on the damage to local streets on Wednesday.
