ckpgPRINCE GEORGE—The Northern Bear Awareness Society (NBAS) is urging Prince George residents to be more bear aware.

According to the Fur Bearers, every year on average 33 bears are killed in Prince George. That is the highest in the province equaling to 231 bears killed since 2015. NBAS says this is due to attractants being left out on people’s property. Attractants such as bird feeders, fruit trees and garbage bins can attract unwanted attention from bears.

Bears are highly food motivated and intelligent animals that will take advantage of easy meals if they are left out. NBAS is reminding people to remove attractants from their properties by doing things like keeping garbage and bird feeders in bear proof areas like sheds and garages.

Bears that become food conditioned and habituated to people provide a public health risk become part of a cycle that results in more bears being killed.
