PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Potters’ Guild is thrilled to announce that they have been awarded a major grant from the BC Arts Council through the Arts Infrastructure Program.

The Guild will receive $40,000 to assist with the development of a multi-purpose space dedicated to enhancing the existing equipment, opportunities, and workshops at Studio 2880.

“The Guild has acquired space for a multi-purpose space that will expand our capacity for glaze development,” explains Jim Fitzpatrick, President of the Potters’ Guild. “Right now, we can use traditional glaze applications, but this grant will allow us to offer a whole host of other opportunities to our members, students and other artists,” he adds.

The opportunities to explore different glazing techniques have exploded in the past decade, and tools are now available to allow ceramic artists to immensely increase artistic expressions in their work. This multi-purpose facility helps the Guild provide for training and practice in a myriad of these different techniques. It will also allow potters to form partnerships with other artists in our community for unique artistic collaborations.

The Guild is one of the tenants in Studio 2880 on 15th Avenue, all of whom are looking for extra elbow room.

“It’s an aging facility. We’ve been here for more than 45 years,” explains Karen Heathman, President of the Community Arts Council. “This property was granted to the art by the Province a long time ago. It used to be an old Forest Service building. It has served us very, very well.”

The Arts Council is working on a Downtown Arts Strategy with the City, which seemed to be taking shape two years ago.

“It was 90 percent done and then it died before COVID,” says Heathman. “Along with that died a lot of the Community Arts Council’s plans to move and revitalize an area downtown and look at different locations.”

“We would like to gratefully acknowledge the BC Arts Council, the staff and board of The Community Arts Council of Prince George & District, and our community who make our organization stronger, ” said Fitzpatrick.

This Potters’ Guild expansion project is expected to be completed by December 2022.
