Wildfire season expected to heat up in July

PRINCE GEORGE — After a June full of rain, the start of the Wildfire season has been slow.

However, that’s not expected to last for much longer. The BC Wildfire Service provided a seasonal forecast today where they admitted they’re expecting things to heat up soon.

“As we get into the middle of the heart of summer, with the forecast presented today, there are good chances of getting into that warm weather. So inevitably, we’ll likely see an increase in fire activity,” said Matt Macdonald, the lead forecaster at BC Wildfire Service.

The PG Fire Centre was fairly busy battling blazes as of Thursday, and they say they’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws their way.

As of July 7, there were nine fires active in the Prince George Fire Centre. The fires currently out-of-control are not wildfires of note at this time,” says Alex Lane, a fire information officer. “We now have staff crews and support personnel ready to respond. So we have enough staff for the initial attack if they arise.”

While the province prepares for more Wildfires throughout the summer, a wet June allowed the BC Wildfire Service to help nearby jurisdictions experiencing hotter conditions.

“There is currently 113 personnel from the B.C. Wildfire Service that are supporting the folks up in the Yukon,” says Katrine Conroy, the Minister of Forests.
