MONTREAL – Just 42 picks separated Prince George Cougars Tyler Brennan and Ty Young on the draft board in Montreal on Friday.

Tyler Brennan was selected with the 102nd pick (4th round) by the New Jersey Devils and Ty Young was called by the Vancouver Canucks with the 144th pick (5th round).

The duo entered the draft being among the top 10 goalie prospects, with Brennan ranked as the top goalie and Young being ranked 9th. Brennan became the third goalie selected, being drafted after the Buffalo Sabres took Finnish goalie Topias Leinonen with the 41st pick and Seattle selected Finnish Niklas Kokko 58th overall. The Prince George goalie was the first North American goalie selected.

Meanwhile, Ty Young maintained his rank as the 9th best goalie prospect. However, after being ranked as the 6th ranked North American goalie, he became just the fourth goalie from North America selected.

Brennan, from Winnipeg, Man., played in 39 games this season, and posted an 11-25-1-1 record, with a 3.58 goals-against average (GAA) and .899 save percentage (SV%). He also had four shutouts. Brennan was excellent in the WHL Playoffs, as he posted a 1.86 GAA and .954 SV% in four games against the Portland Winterhawks.

Young moved up from his midseason ranking of 21st to sixth among North American Goalies. He appeared in 23 games this season and compiled a 6-9-3-0 record while sporting a 3.50 GAA and .899 SV%. He was at his best in the last month of the regular season. In six games in April, he posted a 2-2-2-0 record and an impressive 2.35 GAA and .931 SV%.

When the Cougars begin the 2022-23 WHL season, fans will be treated to an NHL draft pick between the pipes regardless of whether it’s Brennan or Young.

The two goalies were the only members of the Prince George Cougars selected in the 2022 NHL Draft.
