CHILLIWACK — The Prince George Kodiaks opened up their first season in the BC Football Conference with a season-opening clash against the Valley Huskers Saturday night at Exhibition Park in Chilliwack.

Despite a strong performance out of the Kodiaks in the first half of the game, trailing 10-5 at the half, their inexperience as a young club shined through in the latter parts of the game as the Huskers pulled away to put away a 31-5 victory.

In the first quarter, the Huskers opened the scoring on their first offensive drive of the game, settling for a field goal to go up 3-0. On the ensuing drive, the Kodiaks matched the scoring with a field goal of their own. Noah Schneider took claim to the first-ever points scored in team history, tying the game up at 3-3.

The second quarter saw the Huskers add a touchdown through the air as quarterback Josh Janssen established the passing attack amidst a balanced offensive scheme between the both the run-game and putting the ball through the air.

A safety for the Kodiaks saw the halftime score sit at 10-5 heading into the back half of the game.

That’s where the inexperience of the Kodiaks showed itself as the Huskers mounted a strong offensive effort, catching the Kodiaks secondary out of position, opening the way for some wide-open connections between Janssen and his receivers.

Defensively, the Huskers kept the Kodiaks off the board entirely in the second half as they pieced together 21 points.

Valley begins the season off to a 1-0 start while Prince George will look to build off their first taste of BCFC competition as they sit with a 0-1 record.

The Kodiaks will now look ahead to two weeks of preparation as they will have a bye week in Week 2 and a full week of practice leading up to their home opener Aug. 6 in Prince George, when they play host to the Kamloops Broncos at Masich Place Stadium.

Game time for the home opener is 7:00 p.m.
