PRINCE GEORGE – A 22-year-old Prince George woman is trying to make the best of a tough situation with her power chair which has decided to quit.

Jenna Wuthrich has gotten used to replacing her power chair every five years or so since she was born. Due to a condition called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, Jenna’s joints are locked, her muscles are weaker than normal, and her range of motion is limited.

Despite her disability, the Duchess Park graduate has made a name for herself in the local art community by painting with her mouth.

Over the years replacing the power chair was simple, the province funds power chair replacements for children although when you age out of the system things drastically change.

“It’s really frustrating because my issues don’t change, I turn into an adult and it’s not like my issues go away,” said Wuthrich.

A new power chair for the talented local artist is about $32k with the province set to cover a portion of that.

“My wheelchair for me is just like my legs, I cannot do anything without it,” said Wuthrich who was actually let go from her job because her power wheelchair was so unreliable she ended up being stuck on the sidewalk and late to work more times than she would like.

Todd Doherty, MP for Cariboo-Prince George said when he heard about Jenna’s story he wanted to do everything he could to help.

Doherty said hearing of many stories of children ageing out of the system and being without financial support is frustrating and hopes things can change going forward.
