PRINCE GEORGE– On September 16th Jared Young, who was born and raised in Northern BC stepped foot onto the famed Wrigley Field. Not only did he become the 17th Canadian to play in the MLB this season but the first ever player born in Prince George.

Young made his debut with the Chicago Cubs after getting called up two days prior. The 27-year-old started today’s game vs the Rockies at 1st Base, becoming the first ever player born in Prince George to play in an MLB game. But Young wasn’t done there as he also ripped a ball into right field for a double.

Not only did Young record a hit in his four at-bats, but he also made a couple of tremendous plays at first base helping the team register some crucial outs. It’s something that Young’s teammates back in Prince George always knew he was capable of.

Watching the journey Jared’s been on, the way he plays. Every year he’s moved up to the next level from his college to Div 1 2 3 as he’s progressed through the ranks. And, you know, it’s no surprise at this point that he’s finally made it, watching the way he’s progressed. –Cole Laviolette, Former Teammate of Jared Young

Young started here in Prince George making his way up to College, AAA, and then the majors. However, before the big stages, he started here at Citizen field with the Prince George Youth Baseball Association. The president of the PGYBA Frank Peebles says it’s a great thing to see Young’s journey.

And I’m just so thrilled for Jared because this is something that can never be taken away from him. Once you cross that line and get the call-up, that’s it. Now you’re a major league player for the rest of your life. Whether you’re up or down or on a different team doesn’t matter. This is great for Prince George. Super exciting for Jared. – Frank Peebles, President, PGYBA

Young also never forgot his roots coming home from college to help kids train at Northern Baseball Training here in Prince George. It’s something co-owner Doug Clark appreciates and says that Young making his MLB debut today has opened up opportunities for other kids looking to make the show.

It’s amazing for him. I’m super proud of him. He’s worked very, very hard. It’s just huge for kids in Prince George and in Canada. He’s just a prime example that it doesn’t matter where you come from, that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself. – Doug Clark, Co-owner, Northern Baseball Training

The Cubs did end up winning the game 2-1 and Young will look to be a regular in the lineup going forward.
