‘School board governance’ concerns prompts man to run for trustee seat

PRINCE GEORGE — Martin Taylor, a semi-retired professional, is taking a run at a trustee seat in School District 57.

He moved back to Prince George a couple of years ago to spend more time with his grandchildren and says he’s been “quite concerned with the issues of board governance with the school district and senior staff turnover.”

“I’m sure it’s trickling down through the organization. People likely concerned whether people are coming or going. And my secondary focus is to make sure students have access to a good, wholesome eduction.”

Taylor says that all starts with students having a welcoming environment when they arrive at school.

“And that they’re able to enroll in all sorts of different programs before school, during school, and after school.”

He says he’d also like for kids who speak different languages to get help.

“I know we have French Immersion but perhaps there’s other programs we can offer in other languages also.”

Taylor runs a municipal consulting company and says his work with local government would make him a good trustee.

“I understand the role between board and management. Perhaps that’s led to some of the problems in the past – people are not understanding their roles once they get elected.”

Election day is October 15.
