AutismBC fighting back against funding changes

PRINCE GEORGE- Over the last 10 months, AutismBC has run a research project, reaching out to parents and families for their thoughts about the change of funding for children diagnosed with autism.

“96 per cent that wanted to continue with the individualized funding,” said Julia Boyle, the executive director of AutismBC. “It’s quite a strong message.”

A message that the BC Liberal Party hope is heard in Victoria.

“I call on Premier Eby to realize the trauma that these families, 96 per cent of folks don’t want this,” said Karin Kirkpatrick, the opposition critic of the ministry of children and family development. “He has an opportunity for change right now, and hopefully he’ll make the right change.”

While 96 per cent of people in support of individualized funding is the headline, It wasn’t the only number to stick out. 85% of people who participated in the survey want feel a proper diagnosis is necessary, Something that would be hard to come by with the change in funding.

“The waitlist for diagnosis is going through the roof like it’s gone up exponentially and that’s not being addressed,” said Boyle

AutismBC also urges the BC government to index the provincial budget, to ensure it has the staff for Autism Assessments.
