PRINCE GEORGE- As the aftermath unfolds on Canfor’s decision to close the pulp mill here in Prince George, there are still many questions needed to be answered.

The most pressing is how many jobs are lost.

“Canfor quoted around 300 total,” said Chuck LeBlanc, the president of Public and Private Workers of Canada, Len Shankel local 9. ” We’re figuring somewhere in about 200 to 220 ish, depending on retirements and that type of thing.”

The closing of the pulp mill surprised many Wednesday afternoon, and as for who will be impacted by these cuts, that is still undecided.

“We need to look at our seniority lists and department lists and start compiling, that’s going to take a little bit of time,” said Leblanc.

The union also said that while the right decisions must get made, they hope the process isn’t prolonged so their members can have some peace of mind.

Both the union and the provincial government have said they are providing support options for those impacted by the closure.
