PRINCE GEORGE – Special Olympics BC Prince George has sent 18 athletes to Kamloops to compete in the 2023 SOBC Winter Games. After months of preparation, athletes will take part in 3 different Sports. Snowshoeing, Curling, and 5 Pin Bowling.

Monday night was a busy one at Black Diamond Bowl & Billiards. As athletes tuned up their game one last time before taking off to the games.

“We’re preparing, ourselves to compete against athletes from across B.C. and to prove ourselves.” – Adam Spokes, Taking part in the 2023 Special Olympics BC Winter Games

Adam Spokes is one of those athletes. A member of the 5-pin bowling team and it won’t be his first rodeo. He and his teammates competed in Nationals for Team BC back in 2020. Although he admits it’s very exciting to compete for a chance to qualify for the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter games. He works on trying to improve month by month and raise his average score while also supporting his teammates.

“Mostly I try to focus on just little jumps of improvement. You know, this month, my average is this. You try to improve it next week. You know, little jumps.”

Head Coach Carol Frances Lee is another member who helps guide these athletes and says most can’t wait to compete this week on the big stage with excitement at an all-time high.

“They’re thrilled to go. I’ve had one of the athletes in front of me just about every day with all of these questions, but out of ten it would be a ten.” –Carol Frances Lee, Head Coach

But the big goal for Adam this weekend?

“There’s only one real goal. Those that do well in provincials go to nationals. But to tell the truth, I’d just be happy to do well. Do a little bit better than my average, you know. Everything else is just gravy. It’s nice to have. But you don’t expect it.” – Adam Spokes, On his goal this week

The games will be held from February 2nd to 4th in Kamloops. With over 500 athletes with intellectual disabilities from throughout BC taking part.
