Deicer

Fighting ice build-up with deicing agents

PRINCE GEORGE – Winter weather creates icy roads and walkways, which leads to dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians. At times chemical deicers are used to fight the building ice.

Walking outside can be challenging as under the snow is a layer of slick ice. To lower the risk of falling, many people use a chemical deicer.

A deicer is a substance that prevents the formation of ice. There are several deicers, but all react differently and may affect the surrounding area.

According to UNBC Chemistry Professor Dr. Whitcombe, the most effective deicer is ethylene glycol, that’s applied to airplanes before it is ready to take off.

“ An antifreeze is very, very sweet. And so dogs look at it and go, Oh, great candy, I’m going to lick it. And the problem with that is that the ethylene glycol will kill your dog.”

Dr. Todd Whitcombe, UNBC Chemistry Professor

Dr. Whitcombe suggests using what is readily available for those looking for an environmentally friendly option which is grit or sand.
