Prince George Public Library recognize L’heidli T’enneh lands as ancestral and unceded

L’heidli T’enneh / Prince George – L’heidli T’Enneh Chief and Council gathered at the Prince George Public Library this morning as honoured guests for a surprise joint announcement of solidarity from the Library’s Director and Chair.

The recognition of the ancestral un-ceded territory of the L’heidli T’enneh, makes the Prince George Public Library the latest institution in the city to have approached the first nations band on their own volition, with the goal of finding a way to recognize their 9000 year old history and honor the vibrant heritage that the L’heidli T’enneh themselves are so proud to share with others.

For just the second time in the long history of the Lheidli Tenneh band, a welcome on behalf of the nation was presented by a youth instead of an elder. A look of pride filled John West’s face as he, a young local leader and aspiring band councillor, took to the podium as a representative of his nation, to speak about the value that recognizing the past, has on the future of young first nations men and women.

Representatives of Prince George’s own Chief and Council, Mayor Simon Yu, joined by Councillors Frizzell, Klazzen, and Polillo, flanked the leaders of Lheidli T’Enneh as the announcements were made and plaques honoring the un-ceded ancestral lands of the nation were unveiled. Mayor Yu was invited to the podium for an impromptu speech, where he commented on the strength and resiliency of L’heidli T’enneh First Nation.
