Fallout continues with stakeholders ‘disappointed’ in SD57 trustees

PRINCE GEORGE – Tensions were high Tuesday afternoon as SD57 school trustees met for their regular meeting. That regular meeting was far from normal as the President of the PG District Teachers Association claims he was rejected from speaking.

“This is the first time I can recall that union leaders have been told, no, you can’t speak in a public meeting,” said Daryl Beauregard, President of the PGDTA.

We reached out several times to SD57 Board Chair Rachael Weber for clarification on the matter but did not receive a response.

The change in speaking rules for the board meetings is only part of a number of issues stakeholder groups have raised concerns about in recent weeks. The fallout was ignited by a rant by unsuccessful trustee candidate Josh Silva back in December which led to several public exchanges between the PGDTA and the Board Chair.

The SD57 District Parent Advisory Council said they were disappointed with the actions of the board on Tuesday as well.

“It is a very big disappointment to see them defer those policy updates for another few months,” said Laura Weller, Chair of the SD57 DPAC. “The trustees were very recognizing that there is a cost involved. They asked if there was money involved. Yeah, not so much, but there is definitely time and making sure that these policies, especially anti-racism and the indigenous reconciliation policy, is very important to our students.”

Trustees Betty Bekkering and Gillian Burnett were both heavily in favour of approving the policies that have been waiting since November. The rest of the board including Trustees Antrim, McLean, Weber, and Brennan all said they needed more time to look the policies over.

The board also enacted a policy previously approved to stop the live streaming of the regular board meetings. Instead, those meetings are expected to be recorded and posted in full on SD57’s website.
