Protecting Green Space

PRINCE GEORGE – Many residents see the value of green space in their city. However, finding the right balance between green space and economic development can be challenging.

Prince George prides itself on over 1,500 hectares of parks and green spaces, equivalent to five of Vancouver’s Stanley Parks. For some residents preserving these spaces and establishing more comes with its challenges.

“If you’re passionate about saving green space, get involved in protecting places. I think we’ve got to make your voices heard at City Hall. Contact your city councillors. And also get engaged with the planning process. There’s a Planning and Development department. We need to reach out and make sure that our voices are being heard”.

Long-time councillor Grath Frizzell says there are processes in place that protect green space for aesthetics and animal corridors.

The city re-looks at the official community plan every ten to five years. It’s a document that sets the city’s planning and land-use management direction. And this year, the city will be revising the OCP.

The city saw steady growth in building permits over the last three years, but it still needs to be seen how the council plans to balance economic growth with protecting green space.
