It’s Francophone Day

PRINCE GEORGE – It is Francophone Day in BC and there was a special celebration in Victoria today, with a direct tie to Prince George.

There are 80 kids in l’ecole Franco-Nord in Prince George and the choir produced a video to air at the event in Victoria.

There is a reason the school was chosen to produce the video.

“We are a welcoming community to Francophone immigrants,” explains Nancy Gauthier, Principal of l’Ecole Franco-Nord. “So Le Cercle des Canadiens Français de Prince George, the French Association here in Prince George welcomes French immigrants from all over the world.”

It took the kids in the choir a while to get the song down and fancy footwork figured. But for each of the students, the song has significance. “It’s a lot of fun to be part of a choir,” says Salimata. “I like it that we talk a lot about how you don’t have to be anything that you’re not.”

“Everyone is equal and everyone is included,” says Tamara. “No matter what colour your skin is or how tall you or short.”

“Well it’s more a volunteer thing,” says Adelynne. “This is my last year in this school, so I really felt like I wanted to really go all out.”

“For me it’s like, sometimes when I walk out the door, some people look at me weirdly,” says Amissa. “And that song meant to me because they’re talking about how everybody is equal.”
