All eyes on axolotls at The Exploration Place

PRINCE GEORGE- It was a large crowd at the exploration place Monday morning. All to see their Axolotls.

Feeding on a diet of nightcrawler worms the amphibian is native to Lake Xochimilco and in the valley of Mexico and the canals and waterways of Mexico City.

Axolotls are illegal to own in the province because believe it or not, the smiling critters are invasive species and in the right conditions an Axolotl in the wild could be deadly.

“They would overtake any ecosystem and basically kind of just snuff out any native species in British Columbia because they are the type of predator they are,” said Cassidy Threlkeld, an assistant animal keeper at The Exploration Place.

If you want to see The Exploration Place staff feed the Axolotls you can find the schedule on their Facebook page.
