PRINCE GEORGE — A woman who was a tenant of BC Housing says she was evicted because according to BC Housing she was over housed.

Danielle Jewett, a mother of two small children and who is also blind, has been a tenant with BC housing for at least 15 years. On January 25, Danielle received a surprise letter from BC Housing saying that she had been evicted. In the letter from BC Housing, Danielle was evicted for being over housed.

“Over housed by one room. One additional extra room in my unit that I’m renting now. So because of that one room, I’m over housed. So they’re saying vacate. They’re not offering any other form of housing within B.C. housing. They’re just saying leave.” – Danielle Jewett

Despite having to pay BC Housing for damages, now Danielle says she is owed money from them.

“They owe me, because I overpaid their 1900 dollars. I faithfully paid it in a little more than a year and a half. And now I’m sitting there with a $400 balance.” – Danielle Jewett

BC Housing is a provincial Crown agency that develops, manages and administer a wide range of subsidized housing options across the province. Danielle has a message for those who may be in a similar situation to hers.

“Just try to learn from my unfortunate circumstances or experience with a funded, government funded housing that if this could happen to someone, is simple as me, then it can happen to anybody out there. It’s just that not a lot of people aren’t too verbal and don’t know the avenues to channel to get that information out there or where to turn for advocacy or human rights.” – Danielle Jewett
