PRINCE GEORGE — The BC College of Nurses and Midwives has suspended a Prince George nurse for practice issues between July and November 2022.
On March 22, 2023, Consent Agreement between BCCNM and Robert Harris, RN of Prince George, B.C., was approved to address practice issues that occurred between July and November 2022 “related to knowledge-based practice, inadequate documentation, unsafe medication and blood product administration, communication of patient detail, and professional accountability.”
Harris has voluntarily agreed to terms equivalent to a limit and/or condition on their practice, including:
- A suspension of their nursing registration for two months as a result of not adhering to standards related to documentation and safe medication administration, and for breaching a term of his interim undertaking with BCCNM on two separate occasions when he administered an IV medication and a blood product when they were not allowed to do so without supervision;
- A 24-month limit prohibiting them from practising in high-acuity, stepdown, or critical care environments;
- A 12-month limit prohibiting them from being the sole RN on duty, being in-charge, and providing regulatory oversight to students or new learners in the practice environment;
- A 6-month limit prohibiting them from assuming in-charge duties;
- Remedial education in medication administration, documentation, ethics, intrapersonal/professional communication, and critical thinking;
- A robust orientation including lab-based demonstration of clinical competencies prior to providing patient care;
- Direct supervision of their nursing practice for a minimum of 144 practice hours; and
- Development of a learning plan, which will be shared with their employer and with BCCNM.
