PRINCE GEORGE – In BC’s toxic drug crisis, a counterdrug called Naloxone has been crucial. The use of it can reverse an overdose of opioids.

Tanis West is on a mission to educate people on the drug’s benefits as it brought her back to life ten times in one month.

Tanis West spent a few years using hard drugs and was brought back to life several times with Naloxone, also known as Narcan.

“I didn’t care about my life. I gave up. And so I was very devilish with my using. And so I would go down, and someone around me would have Narcan.” Tanis West, Naloxone advocate.

Having been sober for two years, she wants to see more people understand the importance of having a kit nearby and how to use it.

West says she was lucky to have people around her who understood how to inject the drug when overdosed. While on her sobriety journey, she visits those most vulnerable to overdosing and shares her story of survival.

For some, the contents of the Naloxone kit can be overwhelming. The kits contain vials and needles. A medical professional can teach how to store and use the equipment properly.

The drug must not freeze or be exposed to sunlight or past its expiry date, as it may lose its potency.

West says some signs of a person overdosing are trouble breathing and turning blue.

Naloxone kits are available for free at most pharmacies. The province also has an online training video.
