PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George City Yard crews are working diligently to prep their equipment for their next assignment: scouring the streets and sidewalks inch by inch, sweeping, spraying, and vacuuming as they go, until all the small. and not so small, pieces of traction material and sand have been picked back up.

It’s a beautification program with a twist. Although the Ice and snow is no more, Fracture and sand dose not melt quite as easily, instead it’s been slowly gathering on city streets all winter long. Now, as traffic picks up on dry and dusty streets, a haze gets kicks along with it by the passing tires, ultimately affecting air quality. That’s why city crews work in phases to scrub down the streets and vacuum up whats leftover.

You might be wondering what happens to all the dirt once city crews have swept it all away… it’s actually stored at the city yard, in the very same lot where just last season it was loaded aboard plow trucks that spread it across town in a fight against the ice. The fracture piles will eventually be carted off to the local landfill, where it’s reused as a cover layer.
