PRINCE GEORGE – According to statistics from the BC RCMP, in all of 2022, there were 6 homicides in Prince George, this year, there have been 4 since the beginning of January.

The Prince George RCMP has recently warned the public about the potential for spillover violence in areas where drug-related crimes have been taking place. That’s a signal of high tensions on the streets that has Mayor Simon Yu concerned about the possibility of unchecked gang violence spiraling into a power struggle.

Mayor Yu Acknowledged the increased pressure on police due to the recent spike of violent crimes, and he’s reiterated the RCMP’s calls for caution, reminding the public to look out for one another, and call 911 if they see anything in their neighbourhood that’s cause for concern. MLA for Prince George – Mackenzie Mike Morris, himself a former superintendant for North District RCMP, says the warning from local police is something that should be taken very seriously, and it’s a sign here at home of a nationwide problem with an overburdened court system thats ultimately embolden criminals, which has put the public, and first responders alike, at risk as a result.

In recent weeks, a number of historic investigations led by BC’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit have resulted in a string of high profile arrests and significant disruptions to the illegal drug trade in Northern BC. In total, 24 people have been arrested as part of the operations, and all 24 of them released, with the expectation to appear in court at a later date… pending the approval of charges within the judical system.
