PRINCE GEORGE – In Northern BC, From October 1st through to April 30th, all season or winter tires are mandatory for passenger vehicles on provincial highways, with the exception of the mild coastal areas near Kitimat and Prince Rupert. By Mid-april, many drivers in the northern capitol have already begun flocking to tire shops for the swap back to summer tires, hoping to beat the rush next month.

Courtesy the unpredictable weather conditions at high latitudes, and high elevations, snow tires are mandatory in the North for about an extra month versus highways in the Lower Mainland, with the official first day when you cruise the blacktop in studless summer tires being May 1st. Until then, if you get caught without the required tires, even if the weather looks good and the roads are clear, you could be facing a $121 dollar fine.
