PRINCE GEORGE — A rally was held today in downtown Prince George marking 7 years since BC declared a public emergency for the toxic drug health crisis. It included a message from mothers that one life lost to toxic drugs, is one too many.

Moms who have lost a child to an overdose were gathered outside of Shirley Bond’s office on Friday afternoon for the Day of Action on the war on drugs and death, calling to attention how many lives have been lost due to toxic drugs.

Those at the rally also called out MP Todd Doherty for voting against bill c-216, which was proposed bill to amend the controlled drugs and substances act and to enact the expungement of certain drug-related convictions. It was short titled a health-based approach to substance use act. We reached out to MP Doherty he but was unavailable for comment.

Shirley Bond was present at the rally and acknowledged the work that still needs to be done. Bond also said that there needs to be widespread options across the board to ensure that people have access to help.

“So we know that more has to be done. I hear you and I understand that I don’t have simple answers, but I came out today to honor the fact that you were here and took the time to to come acknowledge what is a horrible day. And I see the pain in your faces and I can only commit to continuing to do the best that I can.” – Shirley Bond, MLA Prince George-Valemount (BC United)

Naloxone kits were available and training was also available for those who do not know how to use a naloxone kit, as anyone could be in the situation where they have to use one to help an individual.
