Transition to PG Surgery Centre seamless

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Surgery Centre is the newest asset in Northern Health’s portfolio. The health authority has taken over without a hiccup at the centre.

“And what we will do is this next month or so or two, we will just continue with things as they have been done while we during the visit, the operations there and look at what the opportunities are for us to be able to use that space and those resources to be able to do more surgeries,” explains Penny Anguish, COO for Northern Health.

Anquish says this site will be used for minor surgeries, such as cataract surgery in order to free up the operating rooms at University Hospital of Northern BC, for the more major procedures. But Health Minister Adrian Dix assures this is not a replacement for the impending surgical tower.

“Really, it has nothing to do with the tower build. We’re not building the tower to do cataract surgery, but we want to do it. We’re doing the best in Canada at wait times for cataract surgery. The Prince George Surgical Center wanted to move on.”

Anguish says the three permanent staff are staying on and many of the casual staff have as well and they have picked up an additional seven staff.

“We have a bit of time here to just sort things out. The longer term would be that we would operate that from that site as a continuation of the surgery department that we have at UHNBC.”

She says Northern Health has enough surgeons to fill these new operating rooms, but nursing staff is a challenge but it’s not the only one.

“The bigger challenge right now is anesthesiology. And there’s quite a provincial national shortage of anesthesiologists. So we’re working with the local anesthesiology leadership and they’re doing fantastic work of just trying to really optimize, even though they are down in numbers of being able to keep them as many hours as possible running that you reach and busy with cataract surgery.”

Surgeries completed at the surgical centre include plastic, orthopedic as well as the noted cataract surgeries.
