PRINCE GEORGE – Fire halls around the region have responded to several grassland fires in the past few weeks. Some volunteer fire halls responding to preventable grass fires can stretch resources.

The Salmon Valley fire department firefights have been checking and restocking their wildfire equipment. This spring, they have responded to several wildfires and mutual aid calls.

Salmon Valley’s Fire department priority is structural protection. Responding to a grassfire has the potential to strain the volunteers.

“If we were to get a call out. It takes us away from other things going on in our lives. They’re not quick calls, grass fires takes about 6 hours of our time. And then there’s additional cleanup on top of that.”

BC Wild Fire Service says, currently, there are no fire bans but ask residents to make responsible burning decisions.

Wildfire service patrols and watches for those contravening the wildfire act and enforcing those fines and tickets.

Since Thursday, April 27, Prince George Fire Centre has responded to 14 wildfires.
