PG not keen on following Kamloops on open-use drug ban, yet

PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George will not be rushing to follow the City of Kamloops in the implementation of a ban on drug use in public spaces.

Kamloops city council passed a motion earlier this week brought forward by Councillor Katie Neustaeter which prohibits the consumption of hard drugs within 100 metres of any city park or playground — and on any sidewalk — in alignment with public alcohol consumption and smoking regulations.

Councillor Brian Skakun doubted the success of such a ban citing challenges related to actual enforcement.

“I mean, how are you going to enforce it,” said Skakun. “A lot of people are doing open drug use, especially downtown, using needles, smoking, crack, crystal meth, I mean, you’re not going to be able to really do anything about it.”

Councillor Tim Bennett said he has heard concerns from residents about safe spaces like playgrounds being potentially jeopardized with the province’s decriminalization plans.

“If we’re going to bring in any form of bylaws, it’s going to be important to look at how are we going to be able to enforce it,” said Bennet. “That is a cost that would have to be borne by the city.”

Councillor Trudy Klassen was more in favour of a wait and see approach citing a provincial strategy would be the most ideal scenario with all parties on the same page.

There are currently no plans to have a formal discussion in council chambers on a bylaw to protect playgrounds or parks from the open use of drugs.
