Council votes to take action on Millenium Park

PRINCE GEORGE – Council made it very clear at their regular meeting on Monday night, something needs to change for several encampments across the city.

Voting through all five recommendations from city staff almost unanimously will mark the beginning of major changes.

“We don’t have a huge downtown, it’s what we have. So when encampment activity happened at the core of our downtown area, it affects the city, the businesses, and it affects everybody,” said Mayor Simon Yu.

One of those included council voting in favour of starting a process to begin the decampment of Millenium Park. City staff could not say when that process would begin, insisting they needed to prepare a strategy and consult with partner groups before taking physical action to the site.

Employees across the street said they will be glad to see Millenium Park cleaned up and not have to worry as much about the environment the encampment creates. Several workers told stories of ongoing theft and safety concerns.

Also approved were measures to address public safety concerns, including funding for two additional police officers, who will be dedicated to the new Provincial Repeat Violent Offender Intervention Initiative; a neighbourhood crime prevention pilot program headed by a specialized contractor.
