SD 57 Candidate Questions: David G. Low
1. Why are you running for school trustee?
The reasons I am running for school board are the following:
a. My friends, who know me well, and my wife were encouraging me to run saying, that I would be a very qualified person to be a trustee.
b. The bickering and partisan positions that people take on issues is divisive. Our city is too precious to have such disagreements separate us.
c. The Fraser Institute School Ranking stated that the poorest school academically in the whole province is located in our district. Instead of discounting the survey, or justifying the low-grade, we need compassionate collaboration with the stake-holders, to assist in the process of improving the standard.
Background: Moved to PG in 1992. Married for 52 years and have 4 children 10 grandchildren. All three of our boys live in PG with their families. After I obtained my Master Degree in counselling, I had an opportunity to teach both in the public system and in the private system. My education and experience will assist me in becoming an effective trustee. I am a team player. I am not an approval seeker. Therefore, I am quite able to express my opinion. I am also an empathetic listener. I have an ability to seek understanding of issues and opinions. I can discern what motivates people to do, or say, what they do or say. I am non-prejudiced and treat people with respect.
2. Do you support sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) education in B.C.? Why or why not?
We have to understand that SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) was not created locally. The provincial government adopted it for all schools. In fact I find the question about my support, the wrong question. Better questions would be: How can I help to bring peace into the board meetings? How do I handle conflict? How can we administer SOGI so that parents and students are not being offended and teachers feel safe? I believe in inclusion. No bullying, intimidation or discrimination.
