PRINCE GEORGE – Nearly nine hundred students with the College of Caledonia have convocated this afternoon at the CN Centre. The events both in Prince George and Quesnel honour students in the college’s academic schools: Access and continuing education, health sciences, human services, university studies, business as well as trades and technologies.

And one of the graduates has also been honoured with the Lieutenant’s Governor’s Medal for Inclusion, Democracy, and Reconciliation.

“I’ve been alone this whole time, Right? So I kind of have to navigate navigating my way around not only the city life, but also just the college itself,” says Darian Meesto.

A graduate of the Social Service Worker diploma Program, Darian was one of the speakers at the convocation and had a clear message to his fellow graduates.

“Well, mainly just to remind them of how far we came, not to forget about all the challenging times, because not only that but just to remind them that these challenging times are the ones that made us stronger. And just always to always ponder on that every time as things get harder.”

This will be CNC President Dr. Dennis Johnson’s last convocation and today’s ceremony is bittersweet.

“Well, it is bittersweet, as we were talking about before, and I’m I always enjoy convocation. I’ve certainly been part of many over the years, but I’ll be sorry to see this part of life go now.”

There are a total of 898 graduates, more than half of whom crossed the stage today, with a number of graduates already in the workforce. And for Darian, while today is a significant part of his future journey, there’s plenty more to come.

“What is that chapter? The next chapter of my life is just taking care of my family, and going to a university. I’ve been accepted for open studies and I am. I plan on just finishing university and then opening my own restorative justice society to help with at-risk youth and everything like that.”

This spring marks the completion of studies for 97 registered nurses and will also recognize 138 trades and technologies students.
