Challenging times ahead for SD57 financially: staff

PRINCE GEORGE — The financial picture for School District 57 going forward is not very rosy.

Trustee Sarah Holland asked staff on Tuesday evening about the current structural deficit facing SD57 and staff responded by pointing out that challenging times are ahead.

In recent years, the SD57 Board of Education has been forced to dip into surplus funds to balance the budget in addition to trimming various other departments.

Daryl Beauregard said after years of continued cuts to the district the ‘nice-to haves’ are now not able to be funded.

Beauregard pointed to things like school renovations, paint jobs, and mentoring opportunities for teachers not being able to be funded.

Overall $690k in cuts are on the way for instruction, over $750k of reductions in district administration, and $312k in maintenance and operations cuts.

Chair Rachael Weber said the board did everything in their power to keep the cuts out of the classroom, and ultimately education needs to be better funded across BC.
