VICTORIA — June was another tragic month for unregulated drug deaths in British Columbia.

The BC Coroners Service reports unregulated drug supply claimed 184 lives in June, including 15 in the Northern Health region.

Provincially, 1,228 people have died, 92 in Northern Health. Thirty-nine people have died in Prince George in 2023.

Fentanyl has been detected in 84 per cent of all unregulated drug deaths in B.C. with 47.4 per cent of those who died doing so in a private residence.

“British Columbia is continuing to lose community members at record rates as a result of the toxicity of the unregulated drug market ,” said Lisa Lapointe, chief coroner.

“Illicit fentanyl continues to drive the crisis, which is causing deaths in large and small municipalities, towns and cities across the province. This health emergency is not confined to one neighbourhood or one demographic. Anyone accessing an illicit substance is at risk of serious harm or death.”
