Doctors urge parents to keep childrens’ routine vaccinations up to date ahead of school year

PRINCE GEORGE – School is back and with that comes spreading germs and potential sicknesses, so doctors are asking parents to make sure that their childrens’ routine vaccinations are up to date. If you aren’t sure what vaccinations your child might need, there are good websites and practitioners to resort to.

“The most important thing is to be referring to B.C. references because there can be so many. So like Health Link B.C. is a really good option. They have it laid out pretty nicely of what sort of vaccines kids are needing at what kind of ages. So, that’s kind of the main thing. And then even like following up with like a health care professional, so pharmacists, doctor, health unit, anything like that, they’ll all be able to kind of give you that information as well.”

Some vaccinations can also be provided by the school throughout the year.

“There are usually grade six and grade nine routine immunizations. HPV is one of the main ones we see.”

Along with routine vaccinations, there is the influenza shot to look forward to. It isn’t necessarily needed at this time of year, but as October approaches, that becomes the recommended time to receive the dose.
