PRINCE GEORGE — Today is Labour Day, and the annual Labour Day March and Celebration will taking place in Canada Games Plaza.

The festivities start at 10:30 a.m. and will feature a short march through downtown, followed at 12 noon by a celebration at the Plaza which will include speakers, music, free food, games for kids, display booths and other activities.

The Labour Day Organizing Committee is coordinating the event, along with the North Central Labour Council and other local unions and community organizations. The theme for the festivities this year is: Labour movement – past, present, future – fighting for the rights of all. The committee says that the purpose is to highlight the vital role of labour in the community and the many contributions the labour movement has made to the betterment of all in society.

Matt Baker, Chair of the Labour Day Organizing Committee, noted that: “Our Labour Day march and celebration is one of the largest in the province and the country with upwards of 1500 to 2000 people attending. This year the organizing is going well and we are expecting similar large numbers if not more.”
