Fortescue announces plans for green hydrogen plant in PG

PRINCE GEORGE – Global green energy and metals company Fortescue has taken a major step towards establishing a green energy hub in Prince George, submitting an Initial Project Description and Early Engagement Plan with the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office, proposing the construction of a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility.

The proposed facility would be situated at the Willow Cale Industrial Park in Prince George on the unceded traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. In October 2021, the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and Fortescue, signed a Memorandum of Understanding and as part of this, the parties are pleased to announce they are negotiating a fulsome Impact and Benefits Agreement.

The green ammonia and green hydrogen produced from the potential 1000 MW facility could be exported or used domestically to reduce fossil fuel use and help meet climate targets in BC, Canada, and globally. Fortescue Executive Chairman and Founder, Dr Andrew Forrest. “Today marks an important milestone on the road to building Canada’s first domestic green hydrogen supply chain, which will help meet British Columbia’s ambitious climate targets while supporting regional economic diversification, jobs and training opportunities. Fortescue is committed to working with all levels of government and the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation to realize our shared vision to establish a globally significant clean hydrogen sector in B.C.”

Lheidli Ténneh Chief Dolleen Logan, said,

We are encouraged by the collaborative approach of Fortescue on its proposal and are working with them to maximize economic opportunities for our community and secure a meaningful Impact and Benefits Agreement,” Chief Dolleen Logan.

Fortescue has also been working closely with the Lheidli Ténneh First Nation, local educational institutions, and the City of Prince George, to plan for the recruitment and training of a skilled local workforce in Prince George.

The proposed facility could serve as an anchor capability in the development of a Prince George Hydrogen Hub, which will feature other notable hydrogen players such as HTEC and Hydra Energy and connects to export facilities in Prince Rupert via the CN Rail corridor,” said Mayor Simon Yu. “This project represents a significant opportunity for the City of Prince George to play a leading role in the global energy transition while diversifying our economy, creating good local jobs, and improving air quality. We are pleased to see this proposal advance with the regulatory filing. This is good for our city and good for our citizens.”

The proposed project is expected to be a recipient of the Clean Fuels Fund Contribution Agreement with the Department of Natural Resources, once terms and conditions are finalized.
