PRINCE GEORGE – UNBC’s Vice President of Academics has been chosen to head up a unique panel. The national panel will look at research inequities in academia and its Chair Dr. Wendy Rodgers cites an example of one instance of that type of inequity.

As Chair, Dr. Rodgers will lead a multidisciplinary group with expertise in EDI research and practice, law, and post-secondary administration. The Panel will answer the following question: What is the state of knowledge regarding measures that organizations in Canada and around the world are implementing to achieve equity, diversity, and inclusion in the post-secondary research system?

And she cites a classic example.

“So so if we look at research in in cardiac science, so heart health, that the preponderance of research for a very long time was only on white men and white men in the United States by and large, but a little bit more broadly. And so that was very well done,” says Dr. Rodgers. “However, it tended not to apply to women and it tended not to apply to people of color. So we didn’t have a very good idea of how cardiac progresses in women and people of South Asian descent, for example, where it shows up differently than it does in white men. And so that really, really slowed down our ability to provide equitable health care to all the different kinds of people who might be presenting in a clinical setting with respect to cardiac health.”
